new channel and a little chuckle

Two days ago, we subscribed to BBC World. Why we haven’t done that before is an enigma.

When I’m home alone, I have the habit of turning on the TV, and leave it on … just let it “talk” in the background. I also have some strange ability to ‘sharpen my ears’ when something of importance comes on. “Breaking news”, as they call it. That expression has become rather hackneyed — especially on the phone — so I hardly react nowadays. It could even be some sports results! Pfft!

Anyway, by default, I’ve turned to CNN those times. The other day, I found I just couldn’t take it anymore — it made me nauseous to hear about the American presidential election — and I told my husband how I missed having BBC. We called up Bell right away, and asked how much they would charge for adding that to our programming and it was just $4 a month! Yay! Before, they always used to force you to subscribe to some stupid “bundle” or whatever. After a few minutes it was up there on our TV-set, and I reminisced the days I used to listen to BBC World on shortwave radio. It doesn’t feel all that long ago — I clearly remember listening to them during the Falklands war.

It’s so refreshing to have them now, and I actually learn something about what’s going on in the world!

Yesterday, I even heard a little joke 🙂 :

Q: What’s the difference between a hippo and a Zippo?

A: A hippo is really heavy. A Zippo is just a little lighter!

HAHAHA!! That is a funny joke Rebby!
You were able to order just BBC? Excellent. I want W~ Women’s Network back but have to wait til December…..countdown continues for me……

Yes, they have changed something. Nowadays you don’t get stuck with the bundles.

I don’t know that channel, but will check it out now.

W Network shows ALOT of Hallmark Channel movies…..
I like the” Property Brothers”;” Love It Or List It” & “Masters of Flip”……I get good ideas & tips from all of them.

Haha good joke! I have BBC America TV here, not sure it’s the same. I do have the BBC News app on my iPad and iPhone. It gives me breaking news updates but I rarely tune into ANY news these days, too damn depressing. Our presidential candidates are both losers. Klinton is a Socialist pig. Trump is a nobody. We are going down the toilet… Canada has a better system of government as does England.

I thought it was cute too … provided they know what Zippo is.
Normally I wouldn’t say anything about American politics, but let’s just put it like this: “If I lived there, I wouldn’t have anyone to vote for”.

      1. John

I totally agree! I’ve considered not voting. It would be the first time since I was old enough to do so. But that just doesn’t seem right. By not voting, I am giving my vote to some Socialist turd somewhere in this country.

Ha! That’s a good joke 🙂 BBC News has always been my favorite option – it seems to offer a better perspective than most of the American channels. I’ve since given up cable and gone over to streaming, but I do miss the news…sometimes.

Speaking of TV channels; they finally opened up W Network for the month of September for free!!! Excellent!!!
I WAS going to order the Channel come December…turns out 3/4’s of the Home shows I love are moving this month to HGTV channel…
So I guess I will be ordering that channel in December…do not even know what number it is on TV……
LOL it’s always something isn’t Rebby???

Ha 🙂 I have BBC World and CNN news feeds on my internet home page. I avoid the news because it makes me angry and depressed, but occasionally I have a little peek. So as not to miss something big. Like the end of the world. BBC is nice. I don’t have such memories as you associated with it, but I somehow like it. Even though I’ve grown quite bitter against Britain after it chose to leave the EU. As a member of an EU country and an anglophile, I take it personally.

    1. Rebekah M

Yeah, I like the BBC. Right now there’s nothing but the election on CNN.

I’m still a member of a EU country, and I’ve never been able to form an educated opinion about the whole thing … meaning, not just Brexit, but the whole EU.

      1. Mara Eastern

I have no educated opinions on politics, but using common sense, it looks like a better choice to be in the EU than to be out of it, in particularly when it comes to small inconsequential countries like mine. I remember voting for entering the EU in a referendum ages ago. That was one vote I didn’t come to regret.
