The WordPress we know and love isn’t always all that lovable. It’s the best blogging platform that’s around, and I know everything will be alright … eventually. But when?
This is one of those posts about the technicalities of WordPress — I want to get out of my system this morning.
For quite some time, an online buddy of mine and I, have been talking about her signing up for a WordPress account. Many of us here in the blogosphere have encouraged her to do so … to start a blog … perhaps myself in particular. I sang the praises of WordPress and how the sign-up procedure would take her, perhaps, two minutes at the most.
She wanted a dot com domain with it, we’d made sure it was available, I, myself had gone through the signing up, by making up a test account, just so I’d be able to guide her through this process. Nobody could accuse me of not being prepared for this 🙂
Trouble started right away. When you go to WordPress.com you’re presented with two options … two, blue buttons: CREATE PAGE and CREATE BLOG. Okay, so we selected ‘create blog’. Next step is a box where you fill in a word — like your desired domain name/user name. As this was very clear from the beginning, and her desired domain dot com appeared, she hit the button, next to the domain, saying SELECT. And then the browser froze.
Okay, start over again … only trouble was that then the domain name appeared to be taken! Luckily I got a hold of a WordPress-support-person who told me this was just a browser issue, and clearing the cache would do the trick. BUT you first had to sign up for a regular WordPress account and THEN do the domain thing. Nowhere on the page where you sign up, does it tell you to first sign up for a WordPress account and then domain. When you try it, the domain button is just «dead». Not very intuitive, huh?!
Eventually it was all sorted out, and she got a WordPress account with accompanying dot com, but if I’d been a brand new user, I would have found this kind of nerve wrecking … especially when the domain name appeared to be taken, all of a sudden.
As if this wasn’t enough, I learned this morning that you can’t comment on self-hosted blogs from the mobile app, even though they are JetPack enabled. I must have been living under a rock — I couldn’t believe it. Went into my WordPress Reader, from my phone, only to realize that indeed seems to be the case. In this day and age when most things are done from mobile devices … someone please, tell me I’m wrong!
