Temporary arrangement [32/365]

IMG_2308Lately, my neck has begun to feel increasingly stiff, and it’s  hurting too. When I turn my head around, I hear crepitations. Anything that has to do with neck or spine, I find a little scary, but as I know pretty much why this is occurring I’m trying this [what you see in the picture].

I spend a lot of time here … a lot more time than when I was working. Besides, at work we had those physiotherapists and occupational therapists checking us out all the time … we had the latest ergonomic equipment that was around. As soon as something new came out, they tried it on us, because of the static job we had.

Now, since it isn’t getting any better, and I knew why I’m having these problems, I decided to do something about it. I’m not going to stop ‘working’ on my computer, so instead I took the little keyboard for the iPad, which is Bluetooth, placed it on the sliding shelf and paired it with my MacBook. My regular mouse has a cord, which was too short, so I ‘reinstated’ the «Magic Mouse».

This way I won’t have my shoulders raised all the time. Took the foldable cover for the iPad, folded it in three and put in underneath the MacBook to make the screen come up a bit which puts less strain on my neck. I know there are ready-made stands for laptop computers, but I won’t make that investment until I see if this little arrangement makes a difference.

I only made this change last night, so it’s too early to tell, but it feels pretty good.

  1. Excellent! I mean, not your computer pain, but your arrangements to cope with it. I spend all my waking time sitting at the laptop, what’s probably saving me are my smoking breaks – paradoxically – at least I get up, stretch and go to have a smoke outside.

    1. Yeah … there you go! That’s what I don’t do, since I smoke where I sit. I forget to take breaks … In any event; I sense that this arrangement it a lot better, though.

    1. Thanks! I think it will. Maybe I’m imagining things, but it already feels better. The height of the screen is not optimal, though … think I’ll need a stand in the long run.

  3. Do you crane your neck and lean forward?

    I found myself doing that a couple of years ago when I was pixel-peeping at a website design for days on end. I got a horrible throbbing headache that sounded like a generator in the basement. I guess it was because of the constricted blood flow over several hours.

    Sitting back helps, but then I have to tip my head down slightly.

    I guess the people who have a separate screen have it right – keyboard on the desk and the screen higher – like what you have done.

    My wife has a setup like yours – she uses a Mac keyboard and has the laptop on a stand that’s angled forward.

    I tried it but I’m used to the trackpad being right there to hand rather than having to reach for the mouse.

    I used to use an iMac, but I always thought the screen was too high and I never have found a Goldilocks arrangement 🙂

    1. Yes, that’s what I do … what you described, when I have it just on the desk. This arrangement is better, but still not ideal. I think I’ll have to have a stand … a set up like your wife’s. Does she have the «magic keyboard».?

    1. Yes, I realized I had to do something now, before it gets permanent. Since I wrote that post, I’ve ordered a proper stand for it. Will arrive on Friday.

  4. For every action there (should be) an equal and opposite REaction, to avoid repetitive stress injuries…

    1. Thanks Deb! Anything related to neck and spine scares the living daylight out of me. It’s now taken care of: stand and keyboard ordered, will arrive on Friday. Yay! 🙂

    1. Yes, the pain faded almost immediately … after a day, it went down. Still stiff, somewhat. I’ve ordered a proper stand now. That will be nice …
