Five, six months ago, the grocery store we frequent the most, introduced a points system. Got a plastic card and downloaded the app to the iPhone. The first, few weeks, it wasn’t too exciting. You get new ‘offers’ every Thursday, loaded in the app, and after about a month it had pretty much the hang of what we liked to buy.

So … the first times this happened, it was kind of fun! Β«Oh, look! There are points on my yoghurt!Β» πŸ™‚ About once a month, it seems to ‘think’ it’s time to buy toothpaste [my choice of brand], and that renders me 1,000 points! Sometimes, they have in-store points too, and it happens that that particular product is also on your list in the app. Then you get double points! πŸ™‚ The points in out account accumulated swiftly! 1,000 points = $1. I thought that was fun to see how it kept building up, and my hubby kept asking me when we were going to use them. He thought I was going to become a points hoarder! Β Our grocery store is pretty basic — it carries just that; groceries, so thatΒ  could very well have been the case if not …

tassimo…Β a few days before Mother’s Day, the Tassimo coffee machine appeared there on display, for $58! We were close to 140,000 points so the thought started spinning in my head; Β«I could actually get it … for the points!Β» Not that I needed it — who needs a Tassimo?! Β All of a sudden my coffee consumption would be a lot more costly too, which those little containers, but nevertheless, now it sits there on our kitchen counter. Adjacent to it, sits the old coffee machine; I drink a lot of coffee — especially in the morning — so I couldn’t use the Tassimo all the time.

Admittedly, I’m just a sucker for shiny gadgets and devices I don’t really need. I feel very good about it, though πŸ˜€

Apart from collecting points, nothing much is going on. We’ve been out a great deal, I’ve taken pictures and I love the camera. The greenery is still not out here, and I think more inspiration will come with it. Little flowers are always gratifying photo objects — they stand still! πŸ™‚

  1. Your points accumulated so fast, and that coffee machine looks super! Love the Gerbera photo, such a bright, happy little flower. I hope you see some greenery soon.

    1. Hi Barb! Yes, they really did, and it happened to appear in a time when we’d been talking about when to redeem them … and for what!

Gerbera is really happy-looking! πŸ™‚ If I look really hard this morning, I think I can see a very soft hint of green outside..

  2. What a lovely bg!!!! Love it!! πŸ˜€
I used to drink coffee in my much younger days lol. Then for some reason I stoped, I think I got addicted to drink o’boy in the mornings and tea. After some years I tried to drink coffee again but my stomach couldn’t take it… I might try and drink a cup anytime soon again and see how it goes! πŸ˜‰

Great thing with those points!! But I think you’re thinking right there, why get that machine if it would be so costly!

Oh I loooooove that photo of the pretty flower!! πŸ™‚

    1. For a short period in my life, it started pouring milk into my coffee, but that didn’t work. I got stomach issues that I’d never had before. I really love tea, I think it tastes much better. Why I don’t drink tea all the time, I can’t even explain to myself LOL

Those Gerbera brightens up the room, we have three, and they look happy and cheerful!

      1. I used to have milk in my coffee as well… Oh I do LOVE tea!! There is so much different tastes, my faves at the moment are lemon, raspberry or blue fruit… yum! lol

Yes it is a lovely color on that pretty flower! πŸ™‚

  3. I enjoyed reading this – you have a nice way with describing your feelings and experiences.

On the subject of loyalty cards – there’s a section in Charles Duhigg’s ‘Habit’ about how one store knew so much about its customers’ buying habits that it was able to predict pregnancies. That caused issues when it started to send out recommendations for products before even the customers’ partners were told there was a baby on the way…

    1. Thank you, David! That means a lot to me.

*ROFL* @ the pregnancies! But it’s fun to see how ‘they’ quickly pick up on what we buy. Started to buy olive oil there, instead of in Costco, and it didn’t take long for it to appear in my app. Every now and then, of course, they throw in something that we’ve never bought. I’ve tried one, frozen pizza, and it was good πŸ™‚

  4. And what a gorgeous flower it is! Your photos seem brighter. Do you think it is the camera? Or the settings? I love gadgets too, and tools and just stuff. I try to pace myself though. lol

  5. Congratulations with your machine. I did it with at processor for making juice- but it is difficult to clean because it is with so many bits and pieces -so I dont use it very much, but its great and shiny LOL. We have that point system in COOP, and even petrol for the car goes on that – and when we had an oil burner the oil too.
The Tassimo looks very nice – I have never heard about it maybe because I dont drink coffee- and havent done that for about 20 years. I drink tea in the morning, different sorts, but always organic. Beautiful flower.

    1. Oh, I had one of those, but for cutting stuff … potatoes et cetera. So many parts, to wash afterwards, and then to put together again … it was like a jigsaw puzzle! Never used it!
COOP always had the rewards system in Sweden, but I think they got rid of it. You had to be a member, it had been around since the 30’s.
The Tassimo has also been around for quite some time now, I saw when I looked it up. They’re there too … and you can make tea it it too πŸ˜€

      1. Well I have to be a member of COOP too. And now they have opened a bank, as a reaction to all these greedy and “smart” banks that cost us so many money – particularly it has been expensive for people who didnt have very much, now they have less ( and the very rich have much more- but thats another story).

  6. Oh Rebby I hear you about shiny objects!! I would love to replace all my kitchen fixtures….a Tassimo would be awesome!!! I will live vicariously thru you, lol….
I do not have any of the bazillion POINTS cards that are out there. I had Air Miles in Kevin’s name & when I went to cash them in I could not & that was the end of collecting points.
    I have no patience for this….obviously πŸ˜‰
Love the flower photo; so pretty & you are right….flowers do not fly away b4 you can take the photo!!
We have lots of green here but hardly any flowers…still far behind but we will catch up..I think…
Much love Sherri-Ellen & Nylablue too xoxoxo

    1. Hey… We do have an AirMiles card [that’s Sobeys] but never bothered with it.
The ones I’m talking about is Superstore, as it’s called here … might be Loblaws in ONT, any store that carries the brand President’s Choice. It adds up in no time, as this is the store we go to all the time…

  7. Here President’s Choice is sold thru Zehr’s & No-Frills.
I ususally shop at Foodland aka IGA so it would not benefit me.
I was in Shopper’s Drug Mart today & the checkout girl was insistent I get an Optimum card. I flat out had to be rude with her….which I do not like doing. All that for $9.91 that I bought….

    1. There’s one NoFrills store here too, but we never go there — it’s in a different part of town. In QC there was IGA, in the little place we lived, and that was nice.

They have different names, but basically they’re all the same.

We have ShoppersDrug Mart here too, and I do have an Optimum card. I don’t care about that … the only rewards system I’ve really been sucked in to was this PC points πŸ™‚

  8. Points can be a good thing. What upset me was Air Miles not recognzing me as Kevin’s widow with proof & therefore they would not cash in the Air Miles…it amounted to $20-$30. Nothing major.
You are right stores are bascially all connected to each other. I like IGA because there is always music playing which makes it fun….stuff from 70’s & 80’s so I boogey down each aisle with my cart, lol…
The other reason I like them is cashhiers are so friendly & kind. Best service of all the grocery stores!!
    But this is subjective right?

    1. Yes, it’s all subjective. I like both Sobeys and Superstore … we go to both, for different items. They’re so nice. Sobeys would take just a couple of minutes to walk to..
