I spoke too soon

In my previous post, I was whining about how it wasn’t possible to bring the ‘followers’ over to a self-hosted blog.

Even though I agree with all the commenters, I still felt a little let down by this. I was certainly not prepared to pay $129 (!!!) for a guided move, which I thought was the only way to solve this problem.

Today, I was reading an email from WordPress — one of those newsletters — and it was about their support forums. I wasn’t too interested, as I already know the forums and their workings, but something caught my eye: It was an example question about migrating followers to a self-hosted blog. Turns out, all you have to do is to ask them, and they [wordpress] do it for you! I just had all my followers migrated!

Wow, I’m so glad something in the forum caught your eye and you took the time to check it out. You got your answer!
I want to go over to a self-hosted blog too although I can’t use “passionate about pets” as it’s not available, so I will have to choose a different name. I’m wondering how this will affect my followers. I don’t want to lose them. Any suggestions Reb?

      Hey Barb!
Yes, this sure was news to me! Honestly; I don’t think all that many people know about it … this has always been The problem when moving over to a self-hosted blog.
Now, that we know this, your new name won’t affect that at all! If you perhaps want something shorter, you just sign up for the domain you want and then … when you’re finished moving the blog, you simply ask them [wordpress, that is]. Took a few minutes for me! πŸ™‚

Isn’t that so true, Annakarin! I’m feeling so pleased about this now … actually, super pleased!

Great. I think this may be something I might like to do as well. I do not have a clue as to the why. I never seem to write very much any more!

Well … if for nothing else, it’s fun πŸ™‚ You can have your own domain name on ordinary WordPress too, but here it’s totally your own and you’re in control of everything … fonts, layout, themes ..everything.

Well that’s bizarre! So, if all you had to do is ask them for free, what is this 129$ fee for??

I’m not sure what else is included in that amount. Never came close to even consider it … I only do this for fun! The only thing I can imagine, is that they get to keep statistics and that type of stuff… could be something more that’s beyond me.. πŸ™‚

I certainly do … I’m still feeling surprised! They don’t really tell you this anywhere…
