wild winter weather

So, the blizzard is still upon us. Midnight, last night, we got some flurries, and when I got up, briefly, around 3 o’clock in the morning, it was in full swing. Then I could still see a few cars at the local coffee shop, though.

When I got up ‘for real’ this morning, there was no water. This is not totally uncommon in this building, so at first I didn’t think much of it, but as I checked Twitter, I realized it was a big water main that was broken and it affected a large portion of the city. Sent some thoughts to the city crews that were out there, in blizzard conditions, working to have this fixed. Later today, I’ve seen pictures in the news, of Rothesay Avenue, where it happened and it looked more like a river than a, normally busy, street.

The water came back quickly, and at the same time I received a text message that we’re under a boil order. Understandable … it’s still brownish.

Took an iPhone photo out the window, but that didn’t do justice to this magnificent storm and neither did the other ones I took outside the main entrance later one with the real camera. I find it a little difficult to capture the full power of it, but these two I found half decent.

I don’t know how much snow we’ve got today and it’s still snowing. It’s hard to tell as it’s blowing so hard. When did they start to name winter storms, by the way?! I’ve never seen that until now, with this Nemo.

  1. You got hammered much harder. About 6 inches here, it’s now calm and sunny, temp 30F. The roads are all closed in CT too. Stay warm!

    1. Tomorrow we’ll probably see some numbers, how much we got. It seems to go around and around … one minute you’d think it’s eased up, but then it’s back again in full force.. Tomorrow, according to the forecast, it will be sunny and nice πŸ™‚

  2. Lovely photos showing how the wind is whipping the snow around. Glad your water came back on. My daughter thinks they got around 24 inches of snow in Boston.
Stay warm and cozy. Did McDuff come out from under the sink?
They started naming the winter storms this year, I think.

    1. Hi,
McDuff was out of the cabinet after just a little while … he has not been bothered at all by this storm. Very good πŸ™‚
I haven’t heard any numbers yet, but a guess would be 10″…it’s hard to tell because of the wind, it’s drifting.. and it is by no means over yet..

  3. I can see the wind! I just learned recently that they name hurricanes…you can tell how many there have been so far by the letter of the alphabet they begin with …Hurricane Andrew represents the first one and all the way to Hurricane Sandy and so on… Maybe Nemo is the 14th blizzard this year ???

    1. Yeah, and there’s somewhere you can even make suggestions for a name … if you want to have a hurricane named Janine πŸ™‚ I just didn’t know it included winter storms too..

Tomorrow will be sunny and nice,so we can get out and …have some fun in the snow πŸ˜†

      1. Great fun! I’ll be thinking about it. It’s unusually cold where I live in California but not cold enough for snow. πŸ™‚

  4. With the wind howling the way it was we had a pretty good whack yesterday and, although it’s difficult to say how much really fell because of the wind and drifting, we went from completely bare ground to winter wonderland with over a foot of snow out in the open, in less than 24 hours.
I know our storm merged with another coming up the coast, so hope you’re hanging in Rebekah (it was a gorgeous “day after” here, so hope your’s is as well: )

    1. Yes, we got the ‘merged version’ πŸ™‚ and it’s still here. It was almost bare ground here too. Will probably find out tomorrow, how much they say fell. Usually those Β«days afterΒ» turn out glorious, but I’m sure the wind will still be strong tomorrow.

Did you have any loss of power?

      1. No outages that I know of, thank goodness; but driving was VERY interesting (and, thank goodness, those who could had enough sense to stay home; )
Meant to say how much I love your “Whirling Dervish” photo; to me, it captures the beauty and ferocity of the storm perfectly: )

  5. The “they” who started naming winter storms is The Weather Channel. (giggle).
12 inches here but Boston and especially Cape Cod got slammed. Most of the Cape has no power and won’t for several days.

    1. Β«TheyΒ» are everywhere … whatever the subject matter πŸ˜€

Today Nemo,’s gone and when I look out the window, it doesn’t look like much, as it’s all drifting. Some people out around here were still without power after the last storm..

  6. Dont look like weather for walking… Here everything as usual except that MacDonalds has gone in flames. Give McDuff a hug and stay inside.

    1. Couldn’t have walked, even if I’d wanted to … think I’d blown away πŸ™‚

As I woke up this morning, I was being told about McDonald’s … Olsson told me!

    1. Yes, it turned out to be, when the two merged. The build-up and the hype was great, but that’s a good thing — better safe than sorry πŸ™‚

  7. The National Weather Service was miffed at The Weather Channel for naming the storm. They only name hurricanes — guess they think they’re the only storms worth it — but nevertheless objected to The Weather Channel — wait for it — stealing their thunder!
    (Ouch)

  8. Looks like the wind picked up by the time our storm reached you!!!! You pix are excellent of the storm!!! I could hear the wind howling in my mind!!!
Hope the water is back to normal & things have calmed down there!!!!

    Sherri-Ellen.
P.S.: Nylablue sends her purrs to her sweet McDuff. xo

    1. Today; flurries, rain, fog …you name it! It’s a yukky mess out there.. Oh yeah, that marmot is upset, that’s for sure πŸ™‚

      1. Hi Rebby: We are under storm warning here in Ontario (Saturday). It has been snowing off & on for 3 days now….windy & very cold. The Marmot has booked passage on a cruise ship & is GONE!!!! hahahaha!

        1. Hiya … we’re under a warning too, but it hasn’t started yet! Still +9C. Poor Marmot …hope he’ll be okay on that cruise ship! πŸ˜†

          1. It was ‘much ado about nothing’ the next storm. that came thru here…..it raced thru here so quickly we barely got any snow!!!!
Very cold tho’. The frost had frost on itself last nite….BBBRRRR..
marmot is happily sailing in the Carribean laughing at us πŸ˜‰
