01-01 … all new

2013 started out with a glorious morning here in Saint John! Three degrees below freezing, we have lots of snow, a pinkish sunrise … the moon is still up too. I find the moon intriguing because I never know where, or most of all when, it will appear in the sky.

New Years Eve was nice and peaceful here. We watched TV and talked with one of the sons, Kevin, on Skype. Speaking of Skype … I saw something funny yesterday in Facebook: One local politician here, has a FB page, but he seems to be somewhat «new» to computers/internet. I think he’s quite popular and he has oodles of ‘followers’. Yesterday he had discovered Skype, and he was like a kid on Christmas Eve — it was the best thing he’d seen since sliced bread! He told everyone his user name and said that they could add him! Imagine that! All the Saint Johners that might have an opinion about road maintenance or some such! 🙂 He’ll probably have to re-think that or change his privacy settings.

DSC_2133.NEFIf you’re reading this post here in WordPress [not in your email], you’ll perhaps notice that the blog has got a bit of an over-haul. Colderweather.net was just a domain upgrade I’d paid for — not a username here in WP — it was due for renewal in just a few days. I decided to opt out on that because it always bugged me that I didn’t get .COM. We all have our hang-ups, I guess. It’s all the same … doesn’t affect my followers, unless they had actually bookmarked colderweather.net.

The new title is more cat inspired — McDuff will have to symbolize all the furry and feathered friends that will make appearances in this blog.

DSC_2221.NEFI don’t do new years resolutions, but going through last year’s photos, I notice that I haven’t practised as much photography as previous years. This has to change. Yesterday, however, I felt quite happy when I got back home and brought up the pictures on the computer. Often they look good on the little display on the camera, but when you bring them up on the computer screen it shows that they aren’t sharp. Sooo … hence, I was very pleased to see this female mallard in flight, after our little outing yesterday.

Northern PintailThis was shot out in Millidgeville, by the ferry landing. Lots of ducks reside there, it’s still open water. As soon as I got out of the car to have a look, I saw that the very elegant, Northern Pintail, was there! What a treat! He was paddling around there with all the Mallards in the icy waters… Perhaps the same one who was in the duck pond a few months ago…

Happy New Year, bloggeroos!

  1. Happy New Year to you – Godt Nytår – som vi siger her. I live far away from towns in the country side, but still there was a noise as never before this NY evening. I was a little worried, we have thatched roof, and some neighbours about 100 meters away maybe would ——.
14 days ago we had oodles of snow and wind, but now- about 9C, plus!!! It can change very soon, thats how winter is in Denmark.
Not any resolutions this year (not because I am a saint LOL) – not because I dont want to change but because I am more aware about what and how I think, say and do things today.
I look forward to a whole new year, 365 days, and the sun is shining ( well its sunset now).

    1. Hej Annette, och GOTT NYTT ÅR!
Thatched roofs must be a real fire hazard!!! Good that you live in a secluded place.
I’m no saint either, that’s for sure, and there are things I’d like to change … I miss our discussions about stuff 🙂

  2. I don’t do resolutions either. More like suggestions.

I’m assuming you’re in St. John, NB? I spent a couple of hours there (cruise) three years ago. Visited the Central Library–it’s beautiful. So was the October weather.

Congratulations on your new cat-inspired title. That’s McDuff in the photo? Happy New Year to you both.

    1. Yes! Saint John, NB …and the cruise ship season is great! Which ship were you on?
The library and the museum is right in Market Square so it couldn’t be more central..
Yes, that’s our lad ..McDuff 🙂 Happy New Year

      1. I was on the Carnival Triumph. I’d like to take that cruise again, but later in the year. If I could choose where I live, Saint John and Halifax would be at the top of the list. I would pack up and move tomorrow.

        1. Carnival Glory comes here on a weekly schedule.
We’ve lived here for four years now, and Saint John is a gem! A little rough around the edges, but that only adds to its charm. It’s not only what you SEE, it’s the atmosphere … people are kind and friendly here.
Halifax … I’ve only seen their airport 🙂

  3. I love McDuff and the new look. Purpleborough is up for renewal. I have not decided as yet whether to keep same or not.
Resolutions? No, I don’t recognize the word….not in my vocabulary.,
    Happy New Year!

    1. Thank you, Linda!
Aww…I’ve always thought Purpleborough sounds so nice!!!

…and no, it isn’t really in mine either — resolutions, that is 🙂

  4. Hey, a beautiful rebuild of your site! Looks great. No worries redirecting either. The mallard in flight is simply stunning! She is built to slip through the air easily, landing gear fully retracted and appears to be ‘climbing out’ as though she is an aircraft. Love this! Dang your good!

    1. why, Thank You, John … that was heart-warming. «Purrsonal mewsings» says a little bit more about me, or what it really is, than colderweather did.

Love those landing gears… cormorants look too funny when they’re coming in for landing..

      1. I said out loud ‘wow’ upon seeing that photo. Being I love to watch commercial aircraft takeoffs and landings, this photo speaks volumes of the wonder of flight and where humans learned how to achieve it. 🙂

  5. Hi Rebby: For a second I was confused when I saw the new name in my email box & then voila’ I KNEW it was you!!!! I LOVE the new name & look & especially McDuff!!! he is so handsome!!!
Today is very cold here however the Sun has shone ALL DAY!!!! We haven’t seen Father Sun in over a week…possibly 2 weeks…..
The photos are brilliant as always!!! I love the duck in flight!
That pintail is so cute….we have them at the bird reserve in Harrison Park here….birds are so beautiful aren’t they??
    Happy New Year!
Looking forward to reading your blogs this year xo Sherri-Ellen & Nylablue too.

    1. Thank you, Sherri Ellen … it’s more ‘me’..
We hardly ever see Pintails here so it was great to see it again. It’s so … sophisticated LOL
Looking forward to the new year … all the best to you, purrs from McDuff to Nyla 😉

  6. I was also confused when I saw the new name, but there was something familiar about it too, and it didn’t take me long to realize it was you! I could tell your writing anywhere, it’s quite distinct, but your photos leave no doubt!
I love the new name and the over-haul on the blog, McDuff can be your mascot!
I love these ones, they are so sharp and clear, and the mallard taking off is superb!
No resolutions for me either, I can make changes any time,of the year.

    1. Hi Barb, and thank you! 🙂 To be honest, I forget that a new name would show up in the EMAIL … just didn’t think of that, even though I thought I’d paid attention to all details involved in this change, like making sure I wouldn’t lose my ‘followers’. Glad you recognized me 🙂

  7. Happy New Year to you too. On timeanddate.com you can find the calendar and check when it’s full moon. I always forget to check, so it comes as a surprise to me too.

    1. I have that as a short-cut here in my browser. The thing is, I never know where in the sky it will appear. Most of my moon shots are taken from the balcony. We’re up on the 9th floor and have a wide view.. I do know where it comes UP, but for that I have to go outside, because out apt. faces north ..

        1. I have a 70-300mm and sometimes it turns out well. I don’t have any moon shot with any kind of foreground though, which would be nice..

  8. Loving…
    the shape of head,
    curve of beak,
    silhouette of stiletto tail,
    crisp contrast of feathers,
    tousled punk rock “wing-do”.
    Happiest of New Years!

    1. Thank you so much, Deb! All the best for this, new year, to you too! 🙂
I’m so happy about that picture… and I’m doing some more practising out at the duck pond now ..
