Statistics

Yesterday I happened to notice a surprising spike in the little site-views graph in the bar here in WordPress. It looked intriguing, as I had not noticed more comments than usual or so. Went in to the statistics page to see what possibly could have caused this unexpected Β wave of visitors to my unassuming, little blog. Soon enough I found out … something that I had no idea of:

They released two, new themes the other day, and I decided to try out one of them [Oxygen]. Turns out, when you apply a theme directly from their themes showcase page, your blog gets listed/featured there in the right column. Since this was a brand new theme, many people checked it out and hence clicked on my blog. I was the only one listed, to boot, so I got a tremendous amount of clicks. Now I’m back with my old theme Ari, as I found the main column too narrow for my taste and there was no way of disabling the right widget area.

While on the WordPress-subject … they seemed to have forgotten to post the weekly photo challenge yesterday. We were many who waited, several came up with their own challenges. I had a photo-walk planned for this morning, so I thought I’d just post some random pictures from that instead. They’re all from Saint John’s Old North End — an area that could have been incredibly picturesque, had it not been so neglected and poverty stricken. There are so many boarded-up buildings, so you hardly notice the few nice ones. Β Many of these wooden buildings are so close to one another, as you can see in the last picture — the thought of a fire on a windy day makes you shudder.

In any event, it was a nice morning and we walked for more than two hours. Very refreshing πŸ™‚

  1. Oxygen didn’t work for me either. These free themes are free because they are somewhat lacking I suppose. Nice pictures, the water looks mighty high at the boat club there…

    1. It was a very nice walk, Joss …nice to get out and when you’re chatting all the time, you hardly notice how far you walk πŸ™‚

  2. Great photos!!

I once had my blog get looked at by many. Like 300 – 600 in a couple of hours. I was shocked. I found that somehow my blog was picked up by a site that rotated through several blogs or sites. So anyone looking was counted as a visitor, even though on the site only a short time. Very odd. Happened to me twice.

    1. Yes, it’s funny how it happens! I rarely look at that little graph, but I happened to notice that it looked different..

  3. Hi,
That’s great that they put your blog up for viewing, I usually go and have a quick look at any new themes, but I am very happy with mine. πŸ™‚
Great photos, and what a beautiful day it seems to be, you do see some lovely things when you go walking, I should take my camera one day and get some photos of the park that I walk through everyday, every now and then we see some wildlife. πŸ˜€

    1. Hi Mags,
I love to change theme and check out the new ones. Most of them, I don’t like but every now and then there’s one … like Ari here, Origin and a couple of others … the ‘clean’ ones..
It’s a lot of fun to get out and take some photos … go for it, Mags πŸ™‚

  4. I thought I’d missed this week general challenge of the week among the many backed up e-mails I am sorting through today, so I’m glad you mentioned there has been no challenge to date. Now I can relax. Perhaps “Mother’s Day” should be the challenge, for the time being?

  5. Is that how a blog gets featured? I didn’t know that. My blog got up on that too and now it is a part of the user showcase as well, and here I was thinking it was something I did LOL.

Your blog is really neat looking and a good example of how Ari theme can look like.

    1. Yeah, when you apply it directly from the showcase page πŸ™‚ I had no idea before.. I really like Ari. I do have the CSS upgrade, but the only thing I’ve done with that, here, is to add colour to the sidebar..
